Apple, Microsoft, Others Publish Open Letter to Washington Requesting Government Surveillance Reform

Dear Mr. President and Members of Congress,

We understand that governments have a duty to protect their citizens. But this summer’s revelations highlighted the urgent need to reform government surveillance practices worldwide. The balance in many countries has tipped too far in favor of the state and away from the rights of the individual — rights that are enshrined in our Constitution. This undermines the freedoms we all cherish. It’s time for a change.

Apple iOS 7 Usage Rates Surpass 70%, Outpace iOS 6 Adoption

Chitika has announced that iOS 7 usage rates have surpassed the 70% mark within North America and are on track to outpace iOS 6 adoption which reached 83% six months after its release. iOS 7 saw impressive adoption levels following its release on September 18th. Within one week, 51% of North American users had updated.

iPhone users are slightly more likely to have updated to the latest OS version as compared to iPad users. The greatest difference being that iOS 5- equipped iPad users still generate close to 9% of total North American iPad Web traffic. The slightly lower adoption rate of iOS 7 is likely least partially due to features like AirDrop not coming to the iPad 2 or 3, minimizing the incentive for users of those devices to upgrade.

While still-active legacy devices make it unlikely for iOS 7 adoption to substantially surpass the nearly 90% adoption rate of iOS 6, the latest operating system will likely reach that point in a much quicker timeframe than its forerunner.

Apple Acquires Topsy Analytics Company for $200 Million

Apple has acquired Topsy, a social-media analytics company, for more than $200 million, according to the WSJ.

Topsy specializes in data from Twitter, offering tools to analyze tweets and other information to help track consumer sentiment. Its tools can decipher how often a specific term is tweeted, find an influential person on a specific subject, or measure the exposure of an event or campaign. The company is one of a handful of Twitter's partners who have access to the so-called "firehose"—the full stream of all tweets posted to the service. Topsy competes with DataSift Inc. and Gnip Inc. to analyze and resell this data to customers.

Apple commented with its typical statement on acquisitions saying, "Apple buys smaller technology companies from time to time, and we generally do not discuss our purpose or plans."

It's unclear how Apple will use Topsy. It's suggested that perhaps its data could alert iTunes Radio customers of popular songs or be used to sell targeted advertising, giving iAd a boost.

Apple reportedly closed $350 million deal for primesense on friday

PrimeSense, founded in 2005 by president Aviad Maizels, CTO Alexander Shpunt, Dima Rais, Ophir Sharon, and Tamir Berliner, is run by CEO Inon Beracha. The start-up's five founders are expected to bring in about $80 million from the acquisition. The company initially showed great promise, mainly because of its close relations with Microsoft. The software giant embedded PrimeSense's technology, which comprises both hardware and software, in the Kinect system used in Xbox 360 game consoles.

Globes notes that PrimeSense's relations with Microsoft cooled, after which the company entered into lengthy negotiations with several potential buyers. Microsoft ended up acquiring Canesta, a rival of PrimeSense, and developing the gesture recognition software for the Xbox One in-house.

Apple and PrimeSense have yet to comment on the deal.

Technology Crossover Ventures Funds All Of Spotify’s $250M International Growth Round

Technology crossover Ventures is making its biggest bet (ever/in years) by backing the entirety of Spotify new $250 million round, a source tells TechCrunch. TheWall street journal's reports of Spotify raising the round at a valuation above $4 billion is right, and it will fuel Spotify’s push to become the defacto streaming music service around the world, our source says.

This is likely TCV's biggest Investment ever. It joined a crowd of VCs in Groupon’s $950 million round in 2011, and led a few other firms into Homeaway’s $250 million Series E in 2008. While it used to do more early stage deals, TCV has been focused around the Series C and D phase of startups’ lifecycles, with recent participation in $40 million rounds for Minted and JustFab.

HUNGER GAMES releases ENDLESS RUNNER for Android and iOS

Unlike the temple run 2 and Oz,the Endless runner is a long run game with lots of power-ups, social elements, and at least a few more interesting challenges from 'HUNGER GAMES'.

You start by choosing a male or female character. Seconds later, you're off and running, an angry swarm Jackers buzzy pursuit. just like the temple run you swipe up, down, left, and right to jump, slide, and move, all in response to the obstacles that appear along your path.

Of course, this being a Hunger Games game, you'll occasionally trade the jumping and dodging for shooting arrows at stuff, a nice (confusing ) diversion.

Panem Run litters lots of items for you to collect along the way: building materials, "sparks," and power-ups. Some of these things can be applied to various upgrades, like better arrows, spark multipliers, speed boosts, and so on.

The Federal Communications Commission will propose that cellphone use be allowed on airplanes

The Federal Communications Commission will propose that cellphone use to be allowed on airplanes, according to the WSJ. Usage would still be restricted during takeoff and landing;they did also ban voice calls and data use over 10,000 feet.

Even if the ban is lifted, airlines have said that their customers strongly object to the idea, and thus they may not approve cellphone use on their flights.
the FCC made a similar proposal in 2004, it received more than 8,000 comments. The FCC dropped the proposal in 2007 amid objections from flight attendants and other groups who said airborne phone calls would be a nuisance. The FCC also was concerned by a "lack of technical information upon which we may base a decision," according to its 2007

Install PS4 updates via a USB flash drive

There are two methods for installing the update: directly onto an Internet-connected PlayStation 4 or with a USB flash drive. The latter can be utilized for those who don't have an Internet connection readily available.
Here's how to do it:
Step one: Insert a USB drive with at least 1GB of free space into your computer.

Sarah Tew/CNET
Step two: Create a folder on the drive titled "PS4" -- no spaces.
Step three: Inside of the PS4 folder, create a folder named "UPDATE" in all caps.
Step four: Download the update from Sony's website and save it in the UPDATE folder on your USB drive. The latest update is version 1.50.

Screenshot by Dan Graziano/CNET
Step five: If the power indicator on the PlayStation 4 is orange, hold the power button until the system beeps (approximately 7 seconds). Once the system is turned off, connect the USB drive.
Step six: Boot the PlayStation 4 in safe mode by holding the power button for 7 seconds.
Step seven: Plug the controller in, hit the PlayStation button, and select the "Update System Software" option. After a few minutes and a couple of restarts, your PlayStation 4 should be up to date.
Step eight: To ensure the update was properly installed, enter Settings, click on System Settings, and select System Information.

The Dual-Screen YotaPhone Will Launch Internationally In December

That long-than-expected gap between promotion and production may have done the YotaPhone more harm than good. There’s little doubting that it raised plenty of eyebrows, but the spec sheet is looking a bit long in the tooth compared to the competition — the final production model is going to feature a dual-core 1.7GHz chipset, 2GB of RAM, a 4.3-inch 720p screen upfront, and a seemingly paltry 1800mAh battery. Granted, it shouldn’t be a total slouch with components like those, but the big question is whether or not the gimmicky second screen will be enough to tempt potential customers away from more prominent rivals like Samsung, LG, HTC, Sony, and more.

Cnet.com: PS4 declassified: How Sony used its PS3 mistakes to build the ultimate developer's console

The PlayStation 3 was a troubled machine, launching at a price that gave gamers fits, and using technologies that gave developers headaches. This is how Sony avoided making the same mistakes twice.

It's the fall of 2006 and Sony has a problem. PlayStation 3, the company's eagerly awaited and hyperbolically marketed successor to the best-selling video game console of all time, has not been well-received. The major issue is cost. With models launching at $499 and $599, PS3 is shipping a year later than Microsoft's Xbox 360 and selling for $100 higher -- $200 more if you compare it to the hard drive-free Xbox 360 Core edition.

That placed the system out of the reach of many gamers, but it was a cost necessitated by complex, custom internals -- not the least of which being the physical inclusion of an Emotion Engine CPU, the brain that powered thePS2. Sony had basically replicated the guts of the older system to enable proper backward compatibility, and, by mixing that with a very advanced processor called Cell, created a system that simply could not be sold inexpensively at launch.

Cost, though, is something that can be fixed, and Sony solved that problem. The economic implications of volume production are well understood, and video game components are high-volume things. Sony would streamline and re-factor the PS3 on multiple occasions, ultimately ripping out that PS2 backward compatibility, and bringing the cost of the higher-end PS3 down to $499 the July after launch, then introducing a new, mid-range $399 model that November. It was an effective $200 price cut in just one year.

A chemical used to make household plastic on Earth was found on one of Saturn's moons

NASA revealed Monday that the Cassini spacecraft detected propylene, a chemical ingredient of plastic, on Saturn's moon Titan. This is the first definitive detection of the chemical on any planet or moon, other than Earth, NASA said.

"This chemical is all around us in everyday life, strung together in long chains to form a plastic called polypropylene," Conor Nixon, a planetary scientist at NASA's Goddard Space Flight Center, . "That plastic container at the grocery store with the recycling code 5 on the bottom -- that's polypropylene."

Cassini was able to spot a small amount of propylene in Titan's lower atmosphere using its Composite Infrared Spectrometer (CIRS), an instrument that measures infrared light and can "identify a particular gas glowing in the lower layers of the atmosphere from its unique thermal fingerprint."

Propylene is the first molecule to be discovered on Titan using CIRS, NASA said, but it likely won't be the last.

"This success boosts our confidence that we will find still more chemicals long hidden in Titan's atmosphere," Michael Flasar, Goddard scientist and principal investigator for CIRS, in a statement

Ematic announces 8-inch Android tablet priced at $129.99

The EGP008 measures 7.9 inches by 6.1 inches by 0.4 inch -- wider and thicker than the Mini, but not by much. It is, however, definitely on the heavier side at 1 pound.

Surprisingly, Ematic's tablet matches up pretty closely when it comes to the screen, at least in terms of specs: 1,024x768 pixels, same as the Mini, and 160 pixels per inch (versus 163 on the Mini). Ematic also promises the same 10 hours of run time on a charge from the EGP008's 3,000mAh battery.

Unsurprisingly, the Mini has the faster processor in the form of Apple's A5, though I'd say the EGP008 is no slouch with its 1.6GHz dual-core ARMv7 and quad-core GPU. Ematic offers only 8GB of onboard storage, but that's easily expandable (in 32GB chunks) thanks to the tablet's microSD slot. There's even an HDMI output for connecting to an HDTV.

The only real hardware limitation appears to be the fairly low-res cameras: 2 megapixels in back and just 0.3 in front. The latter may be sufficient for Skype calls, but I wouldn't count on this tablet for a lot of photography or videography.

The EGP008 runs Android 4.1 (Jelly Bean), and unlike some low-cost Android tablets, it includes full access to Google Play. That puts it on a fairly level playing field with iTunes. CNet.com

NAD Electronics D 3020 Hybrid Digital Amplifier is the best AV receiver

REINVENTING AN ICON, the D 3020 The original NAD 3020 introduced a generation of Music Lovers to true high fidelity sound. The term High Fidelity literally means “true to the original”. In the ‘70’s over a million people rediscovered their music when they placed a NAD 3020 between their turntable and their loudspeakers. This little gem could embarrass amplifierscosting 10 times more with its big, warmand detailed sound. Once people realized what they had been missing it lead them to a lifetime of enhanced musical enjoyment.
REAL WORLD PERFORMANCE NAD rewrote the rules for amplifiers by designing the 3020 for the real world; instead of allowing laboratory test equipment to have the last word, we made sure that we could properly drive real loudspeakers with real music. The result of this real world approach was an amplifier that had less cost and more sound. Today the source is more likely to be a computer or a smart phone then a turntable, but the ability to choose speakers that perfectly suit your taste is still a compelling argument for upgrading to a NAD amplifier. The D 3020 stars with the original NAD concept and takes it straight to the 21st century using the latest high speed digital technology. CONNECT ALL YOUR DIGITAL DEVICES There are inputs for your computer and for other digital and analog sources. The USB input uses ‘asynchrounous’ mode to insure the lowest possible jitter (timing errors) from notoriously unstable computer audio outputs and supports 24/96 HD studio master musicfiles. Coaxial and optical inputs allow many different digital sources to be connected, from CD and DVD disc players, to set top boxes like AppleTV or satellite and cable receivers. There are also analog inputs for iPods and older non-digital audio components like FM tuners. The D 3020, with its wireless Bluetooth capability, can stream music from smartphones, tablets and laptops and even supports the highest audio quality Bluetooth aptX that is becoming more and more popular for its excellent sound quality and low power consumption compared to Wi-Fi. POWER THAT REALLY DELIVERS Power output may sound small at 30 watts per channel, but like all NAD amplifiers this can be very misleading as a properly designed 30W amplifier can often sound superior to a 100W amplifier from a lesser brand. More important, the D 3020 can drive real loudspeakers to satisfying levels without adding noise or distortion. It’s highly efficient design wastes less energy resulting in cool running and longer life. Standby power consumption is <0.5W. Supplied with an IR Remote Control for convenience, the D 3020 is at home on a desk top, a book shelf or cabinet. But it deserves to sit on a pedestal for its incredible performance and affordable price! Google developed a Quickoffice mobile app and made it free for everyone

Google's Quickoffice apps for iOS and Android, that allows users to view and edit Microsoft Office files easily, and are now free to anyone with a Google account.

Google's Quickoffice mobile apps are now free for everyone.
Google
Google is trying to make it easier for everyone to work together, even those who "haven't gone Google yet."
The company on Thursday announced that its Quickoffice mobile app, for viewing and editing Microsoft Office files, is now free to anyone with a Google account. Previously, the app was only free to Google Apps for Business subscribers -- everyone else had to shell out $14.99 for the pro version or $19.99 for the pro HD version.

As a bonus, Google is offering an extra 10GB of Google Drive storage for the next two years to anyone who signs up their Google account for the new Quickoffice app by September 26.
Quickoffice for iOS and Android lets users create, view, and edit Microsoft Office Excel, Word, and PowerPoint files on their mobile devices. The app is also integrated with Google Drive so files can be stored and accessed across devices.
Google added a few new features to the app as well, including the ability to create ZIP folders and view charts in PowerPoint and Excel. Google said people already using Quickoffice for Google Apps for Business can update to the new app.
Google acquired Quickoffice in June 2012 and has been expanding its availabilityever since. While the company is clearly investing resources in the software, its long-term goals still appear aimed at transitioning people to using its Web-based productivity tools.
"Converting old files to Google Docs, Sheets and Slides is still the easiest way to share and work together, and we're working every day to make the files you convert look better," Alan Warren, engineering VP of Google Drive, wrote in ablog post.

Microsoft's Office 365 Consumer Edition Doubles To 2M Subscribers SinceMay

Today at its analyst event, Microsoft announced a new milestone for its Office 365 Home Premium product: 2 million subscribers. That’s up 100%, or 1 million subscribers, since May 29th. Office 365 Home Premium is the company’s cloud productivity suite for consumers that they pay for on a subscription basis.
Previously, Microsoft touted that it had signed up its first 1 million consumer subscribers for Office 365 Home Premium in 100 days. It has been 113 days since it announced the 1 million figure. So, Microsoft, presuming that it reached the 2 million mark today, is adding subscribers at almost the same pace as it did around the launch period.
However, as Microsoft is simply stating that it has “more than” 2 million Office 365 Home Premium subscribers, it would not surprise me if the product was either keeping pace with its former sales levels, or has accelerated slightly. At 2 million subscribers, Office 365 Home Premium is a $200 million yearly business.
Office 365, Microsoft said today, was (as a total product) the fastest Microsoft service to $1 billion in yearly revenue run rate in the history of the company. Here’s the slide that details the 2 million figure:
